MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government is urging Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to intensify surveillance in the markets of Indore and Surat for bird flu infection and possibly withdraw some of the latest stock of chicken and eggs that they may have been received from Maharashtra.

After eight more samples, including one from Icchapur area in Burhanpur district, Madhya Pradesh, tested positive, the state government is not taking any chances. Apart from sealing the borders, the state government has also put a blanket ban on the movement of any poultry products to and from the whole of Jalgaon district to any other parts of the state, claimed animal husbandry commissioner Vijay Kumar.

The route from the infected zone of Navapur and Jalgaon leads to markets of Indore and Surat. “This is the reason why surveillance has to be expedited in these cities. We are sealing the borders and putting up check posts alongside but between notification of both Navapur and Jalgaon, stock may have reached these markets,” he added. Now no poultry product can even pass through Jalgaon with the ban coming into place. “There is a possibility that the vehicles carrying poultry products though the district from other parts of the state might contract the disease as we cannot ensure whether they are stopping on the way at any point."
