MUMBAI: Maharashtra Minister for Public Works (state public sector units) Anil Deshmukh will meet melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bhosale on Tuesday and convince them of the need to commence work on the Peddar Road flyover.

Deshmukh told mediapersons on Monday that the government would reason with them as the project would ease traffic congestion on Dr Gopalrao Deshmukh Road.

While most people are in favour of the project, he said, the sisters have not given their written objections to the project to the government.

Deshmukh asserted that the state government was obtaining clearances from the Centre before going ahead with the project and construction is likely to start by the year-end.

The 3-km flyover will come up between the Haji Ali and Wilson College junctions at a cost of around Rs 125 crore, linking Worli and Marine Drive.

The Worli-Bandra sea link will be constructed between between Pratiksha Building in Worli and go on to the NCPA Complex at Nariman Point.

The sea link is expected to be operational by December 2008.

In 2001, the sisters had met Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was chief minister at that time too, and expressed opposition to the project. The sisters, residing at Prabhu Kunj building, had led a delegation of the Peddar Road Residents Association.

They are firm on their threat to leave Mumbai if the project is implemented.

Lata speaks

Speaking out strongly against the media hype over her opposition to the proposed flyover on Pedder Road, Lata Mangeshkar said the actual issue was being sidelined by the speculation on whether or not she would continue living in Mumbai.

“Whether I live in Mumbai or not is nobody’s business and it will certainly have nothing to do with whether or not the flyover is built here or not. I am being targeted as though I have committed a crime,” said an agitated Mangeshkar.

“Every resident of Pedder Road is scared. This is a proven seismological zone. If there is drilling on the road, the foundations of many buildings will be shaken.”

She also denied reports that she had written a letter to PWD Minister Anil Deshmukh.
