Peddar Road is the busiest intersection in the island city. That’s what the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Powai’s report points out.

Prepared by the Transportation Systems Engineering Group and the Civil Engineering department, the report states that the daily traffic volume on Peddar Road is 60,000 Passenger Car Units (PCUs), with the morning peak hour volume (south-bound) at 3,300 PCUs, and evening peak hour volume (north-bound) at 3,900 PCUs.

The report studied the traffic loadings on Peddar Road, keeping in mind all possibilities in the progress of the ambitious Western Freeway Sea Link (WFSL), which links Mahim to Nariman Point. The findings state that even if only the Worli-Bandra link comes up along with MUIP projects like road-over bridges, flyovers will redistribute people and employment thus easing Peddar Road. It pointed out that in case of WFSL terminating in Haji Ali, Tardeo would get more traffic than Peddar road. The study also stated that the sea link from Bhulabhai Desai road to Nariman Point is attractive than terminating it at the Priyadarshani Park and providing tunnel for through traffic up to Tambe chowk in Marine Drive.

Saying there was pressure on the state to kick-start work on the flyover, Anil Deshmukh, minister, Public Works said the state was not ignoring the IIT report. “The IIT report does not state that the flyover is not needed. It stresses on the sea link, which we are constructing. But the congestion on the Peddar road flyover is growing and our consultant Ove Arup has advised us to build the flyover,” he said. He said he was keen on meeting singer Lata Mangeshar, whose opposition to the flyover has kicked up a row.
