NAGPUR: Even as the Cricket Association of Bengal tried to up the ante on the Greg Chappell controversy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said the issue is a closed chapter. “There is no controversy here. We don’t want to take the issue seriously,” BCCI president Sharad Pawar said on Friday. “Whatever action needed to be taken, has been taken,” he told DNA.

But the CAB, led by Pawar’s arch-rival Jagmohan Dalmiya, passed a resolution at its working meeting in Kolkata on Friday demanding action against the Indian coach for his remarks on Sourav Ganguly.

“The Board is constitutionally bound to take action against any official who passes such remarks against an active player,” said Gautam Dasgupta, a Damiya aide and a former joint secretary of the BCCI. “We’ll soon write to the BCCI making our demand,” Dasgupta told DNA.

According to him, the official can  be punished with fine or suspension. But president Pawar and BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah ruled out any further action against Chappell who, in a recent interview, alleged that Ganguly was clinging to captaincy for financial reasons.

“I’ve no reason to believe that the matter needs any more action,” said Pawar. He, however, confirmed that he would be in Nagpur on Saturday and would be talking to Chappell.

The BCCI president also confirmed that Ganguly had contacted him on the matter. “I’ve told him about the action we’ve taken. We’ve nothing more to say on the matter.” Pawar maintained that he was not aware if Ganguly wanted to take the matter to court. “If he wants to go to the court, that is his choice and prerogative,” the BCCI chief said.

Meanwhile, CAB tried to put pressure on the BCCI. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata on Friday, Dalmiya quoted a BCCI rule that prevented any board official from speaking against a player who is retired. Dalmiya also maintained that his differences with the Board have nothing to do with the Ganguly issue.

Dasgupta said the CAB would soon plan their next course of action. “If just a warning is what they say is action, then that it is a mild response.”
