NEW DELHI: The BJP is agitated over the initial details of Justice UC Banerjee Committee report finding that the fire in Sabarmati Express at Godhra was accidental and not a conspiracy.

The party termed the report as part of the UPA government's desire to help the accused in the Godhra case and is gearing up to "tear apart" the report when it is presented in Parliament next week.

The timing of Justice Banerjee's final report, coming before the five assembly polls including West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry, is being questioned by the Opposition. It sees a pattern into it. Justice Banerjee had submitted his preliminary report days ahead of the Bihar assembly polls.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is all set to fight it out both politically and legally. Modi will benefit in Gujarat, irrespective of what people outside the state comment on the subject.

He has won all elections after the Gujarat riots and swept recent polls in local bodies and municipal elections. The Gujarat High Court has already restrained the Centre from taking any action on the report.

The issue is sure to figure in the coming assembly elections, particularly in Assam where the BJP has some substantive interest and can hope for a Hindu vote polarisation in wake of publication of this report.

While there was an air of curiosity in the political circles about the exact contents of the report, it was not tabled in Parliament on Friday even as it was in session. BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said: "The UPA government wants to help accused in Godhra case. Banerjee report is part of it."
