BHOPAL: Aise kaam mein kaleja chahiye," said Navin's mother when she heard her son was going to marry a sex worker.

Defying social barriers, Navin, 23, tied the knot with Neha, 22, in Indore on Sunday.

The couple is happily settled in Gandhi Nagar in Indore, but not before spending sleepless nights in their bid to escape the Nagpur police, which was hot on Neha's heels because of her "crime" of getting married against her mother's wishes.

"I can't thank Navin enough for getting me out of the flesh trade," Neha told DNA over the phone from Indore.

Navin brought Neha from Nagpur in the last week of December. They went to Bhopal, before going to Indore where they tied the knot.

The Nagpur police had been on the lookout for Neha at her family's behest.

"The policemen came to Indore in search of us on December 27. Along with them were three goons from Ganga-Yamuna (Nagpur's redlight area) and Neha's sister," Navin told DNA.

Neha’s sister was instrumental to her coming into the profession, along with her mother. The couple asked the Indore police to provide them with security, but they refused, says Navin's friend Mukesh.

"We friends kept them in Gandhi Nagar," he said.

Indore Superintendent of Police Adarsh Katiyar told DNA the Nagpur police was looking for Neha because it must have been mentioned in the complaint that she is a minor.

"The Indore police had no role in the matter."  The police pursuit ended when it was proved that Neha was 22. Navin, a school-dropout, is a sales executive with a private agro firm in Indore.

He met Neha during a visit to Ganga-Yamuna last January. Navin's marriage has had full support from his widowed mother, a primary school teacher with a meager salary.

She gave her son his best wedding gift when she said: "I am proud of you my son. You did what your heart told you to do."
