On World AIDS Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh broke several barriers and asked his countrymen to speak up about sex more freely and forget their inhibitions. DNA spoke to people across the city only to gather praises for the PM's bold initiative. The word of caution, though, is that talk might not help, effective implementation is the key

Knowledge is the best protection and the PM is right in saying we should be more open about sex. Sex education should start from early school years. It should continue in phases through college life. More awareness about AIDS should be spread. I personally feel the gay community is the main reason for the spread of AIDS.

India has progressed rapidly in technology, then why not in other aspects? In fact the PM is a bit late, but it is a healthy step nonetheless. He should now ensure effective implementation in educational institutions and corporates.

Initiating a public dialogue should have been introduced a long time ago. Awareness needs to be addressed, because the later it is  detected, the worse. Youth need to understand safe sex and that there is nothing wrong in using a condom.

Sex has been taboo for far too long. Parents are uncomfortable talking to their kids about sex. Even talking about sex in public is frowned upon. This indicates we all need to become broad minded. And this particular act  will help prevent rise of HIV/AIDS.

This is a good move, after Mumbai has been declared india's AIDS capital! It's time we do something about it apart from keeping mum. It is good that the PM has taken the initiative and the responsibility. This will help spread awareness.

Though good, the initiative is elitist as it does not reach the people in rural areas or the illiterate. Will it be implemented or just remain a paper movement like the plastic ban? Use word of mouth to spread awareness in schools and red light areas.

It is great that the PM finally came out in the open. After the Khushboo controversy I thought the country was back to the era of dinosaurs. The statement will increase AIDS awareness. In fact, schools and colleges should take lead from the PM and start being the most proactive.

Now that premarital sex is out in the open, I think it is time that homosexuality too should be accepted and laws against sodomy and unnatural sex offence should be scrapped. It's time that India moves on and respects an individual's decision about his sexuality.
- Sagar Parekh/Bhayander

The prime minister has taken a very brave step, but he should not stop at that. He should go ahead and make sure that there is adequate implementation of AIDS awareness programmes. I am positive that after the PM's declaration the country will lose its inhibitions about sex.
- Bhavesh Kaul/Bhayander

I don't think that the country is ready for such a blatant declaration by the PM about sex. Talking about premarital sex is akin to sanctioning it. We need to know about AIDS and sex but there is a way to do it. Talking about it at a conference isn't going to do any good.
