Newborn girl found abandoned near river in Pune

Newspaper vendor Yashwant Vadavane, 38, found a newborn girl child, wrapped in a gunny bag, abandoned along the Mutha river on Monday afternoon. The child is undergoing treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

Meanwhile, Kothrud police have registered a case against the abandoned child’s mother Laxmi Sunil Holbole, 25, who hails from Parbhani and was residing in Mehendale Garage.

Vadavane found the girl when he and his friends visited the DP Road near Dnyanda School around 3.30pm to check the river’s water level.

Kothrud police station senior inspector KD Vidhate said, “We found that the suspect residing in the nearby area was pregnant. She confessed to the crime stating that she did not want this girl child as she already has a two-year-old daughter. Laxmi is undergoing treatment at Sassoon General hospital, and will be arrested after she is discharged.”
