Zilla Parishad education officer Sunil Kurhade has directed Saraswati Vidyalaya (SV) Union Primary School in Somwar Peth to refund the admission fee taken illegally from 45 students belonging to the weaker sections of society.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had submitted a report that the school has violated the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 by not giving admission to these 45 students under 25% quota as per the provision in the act.

In view of this, Kurhade in his order stated that the school must pay back the admission fee to these students and retain their admissions.

According to the inquiry report, the school not only carried out the admissions under the 25% quota, but also charged students the tuition fee, admission form fee, term fee and caution fee which was against the act. The parents had approached Pune City District Congress Committee general secretary Nilesh Borate, who lodged a complaint with the district education officer (primary) along with MLA Avinash Bagwe and Ramesh Iyer.

Meanwhile, school principal Dineshkumar Pande said, “I received the order last week and a meeting of the management members is scheduled on Thursday. In the meeting, we will decide the further course of action.”

Borate said, “The school claims to be a linguistic minority and receives salary grant from the state government for its teaching and non-teaching staff. Besides, it also distributes mid-day meal to the students.”

Pande said, “The matter has come up at a time when the schools have reopened after the summer break. It is a politically motivated issue and the school is defamed because of the differences of opinion between the management members.”
