Alertness on the part of the examination hall supervisor brought to light the impersonation of an Afghan student by a mystery girl during the geography paper of the first year BA examination at Fergusson College on April 5.

When the examination was nearly over and many students had finished writing the paper, a supervisor noticed that the mystery girl was covering her face with a scarf while writing the examination. Suspecting something amiss, he checked her answer sheet and found that the paper was being written in Marathi though her identity card bore the name of Hasina Omari Abdul Ahad.

Professor Vinod Yeole, incharge of examination co-ordination committee, narrated the incident. “The supervisor then hurriedly called his superior and subsequently I was contacted. Meanwhile, the girl who was writing the paper chanced a busy moment and hurriedly submitted her paper and fled,” he said. Yeole said they verified that the candidate was an Afghan national, while the answers were written in Marathi, which was impossible.

He added that the paper was not assessed and the examination section notified to alert him if the Afghan student approached them for the result.

In June, the Afghan student did turn up. She went to the college for her result and was brought before Yeole and principal Dr Ravindrasinh Pardeshi. She told them that she had not appeared for the examination as she was in Afghanistan. She said her hall ticket and identity card had been kept at her rented room in Kondhwa. She also said she suspected her roommate Duniya, also an Afghan national and a third year student of the same college, of having gone something amiss.

“Hasina then called up her friend, who had already left for Afghanistan. Duniya admitted that she had asked a girl to appear instead of Hasina as she didn’t want her friend’s academic year to be ruined. Hasina claimed no more knowledge about the girl. She immediately took the first flight for Afghanistan. Owing to the suspicious manner in which she left, we approached the Deccan Gymkhana police station asking them to probe the matter,” said Yeole.

Though the police have approached the foreigners’ registration office to mark the passports of the errant Afghan students, nothing more could be expected unless the students return. Till then, the mystery girl remains at large.
