Sagar Kokane, a businessman from Dubai, came into contact with Priya Shinde, a Mumbai lass, through the net. After six years of courtship, they tied the knot on the Valentine’s Day at the registrar’s office in Pune district collector’s office compound.
The mood at the registrar’s office on Friday morning was festive with a number of couples crowding the compound in wedding costumes.
“As many as 68 couples registered their marriages before me on Friday,” said Suhas Gaikwad, the officiating marriage officer at the Pune district marriage office.
Kisanrao Dumbare, Sagar’s grandfather, said Sagar and Priya had first come in contact over the internet six years ago. They met each other for the first time five years ago, and have met five to six times since then. Whenever he came to India from Dubai, Sagar would call on Priya.
Sagar owns a fibre glass business in Dubai, and Priya is a fashion designer. Her family hails from Satara, and is now settled in Mumbai.
The two had planned to get married on the Valentine’s Day in Pune. Sagar had got ready an invitation card for the reception to be held in the evening after the wedding, which has on it, as a backdrop, important landmarks in Dubai, Mumbai and Pune.
The close relatives of both Priya and Sagar were so enthusiastic about the marriage that they had brought with them the ‘Aantarpaat’, or cloth, that separates the couple during the marriage rituals. They chanted the ‘Mangalashtakas’, which were also played on mobiles, after which the couple completed the rituals outside the marriage registrar’s office.
