Associates of the vicar from Marthoma Church, who was killed in a mishap which took place on April 14, faced many problems due to the alleged callousness of the police.

Major (Retd) Mathew Oommen alleged that the policemen of Wanavdi police station not only failed to jot down the details of the eyewitness of the accident who carried the vicar to the hospital, they also entered the wrong date of the accident in the first information report (FIR).

Moreover, he said that the police were also reluctant to issue a no objection certificate (NOC) to take the vicar’s body to his native place in Kerala.

The mishap took place near the station workshop on the Lullanagar- Wanavdi Road when Rev Mathew Thomas was returning home on his motorcycle after attending a function at Lullanagar. Rev Thomas slowed down his motorcycle at a speed breaker in front of the station workshop when a speeding SUV knocked him from behind. The SUV driver later shifted the severely injured Rev Thomas to the Command Hospital.

Oommen said, “We immediately rushed to the hospital and shifted him to Jehangir hospital for treatment. He had received several head injuries and was in a critical condition. He died on April 19 at the hospital. Following which, the post-mortem was done at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) hospital.

He added, “We wanted to send the body to Kerala. But when we went to Wanavdi police station to get the NOC certificate, policeman on duty gave us evasive answers. We got the NOC five hours later only after we contacted a senior officer of Pune police.”

“Though Rev Thomas succumbed to the injuries on April 19, the police wrote April 20 as the date of his death in the FIR. Because of this, we faced a hard time convincing the Lohegaon Airport authorities to accept the body for transportation. The body was accepted only after we gave an undertaking to the airport authorities.”

However, the police officers refuted the charges of callousness claiming that the police cooperated with the associates of Rev Thomas and the person involved in the mishap too was arrested promptly.

Bajirao Mohite, senior police inspector of Wanavdi police, said, “We have helped them thoroughly. All the allegations they have made are baseless. We had to request AFMC authorities to get his post-mortem done in the night. Thereafter, we also gave NOC to them. Moreover, we have arrested the driver immediately.”
