While cases of miscreants duping people by hacking their email accounts have kept the city police on toes, some unidentified people hacked into the telephone of a private firm and made as many as 3,400 international phone calls from the number in the two days. The company operations were closed for the weekend. The company later received a bill of Rs 5.53 lakh.

After conducting an internal inquiry, the company submitted an application to the Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) for investigation. However, CCC officials claimed that this was the first case in the city where suspects hacked into a telephone. That is why, they said, it required technical support to track down the root of the crime. The firm, which is based on North Main Road in Koregoan Park, has been providing cutting edge products, services and technologies to the industry for the past couple of years.

According to CCC, it was a weekend on December 7 and 8, so the company was closed. The hackers made 3,400 phone calls to America. The incident came to light on December 10 when the office opened.

The application further stated that the firm officials got a call from telecom service company informing that about 3,400 phone calls were made from the firm’s telephone. They also informed that the bill of these calls was Rs 5.53 lakh.

The company got the telephone service in 2010 and has 19 extensions. It has also given contract to a private agency to look after the service.

“This is the first case in which a telephone has been hacked. We don’t have the technology to track how the phone was hacked. We are taking experts’ help,” sources from CCC told dna.
