After ordering all hoteliers and restaurant owners in the city to throw wet waste in Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) garbage containers, the civic administration has now taken a tougher stand on the issue.

The civic body will now impose fine and file cases against owners if they are found throwing waste food in the garbage containers.
The hotel owners said that 80 per cent hotel owners would not abide by the  instructions as the establishments were situated in old Pune and hence did not have adequate space to dispose off the waste.

The civic administration is now holding ward-wise meetings with hotel owners to make them aware of the possible action.
Earlier, on June 14, PMC has instructed all the hotel and restaurant owners to segregate wet waste and give it to the nearby biogas plant instead of throwing it in the PMC garbage container. It had also instructed all the 3 and 4-star hotels to make arrangements within their premises to dispose off the garbage.

However, according to the PMC administration, many restaurants and hotel owners are still not following the orders and are dumping the wet waste in PMC’s garbage containers.
Suresh Jagtap, joint commissioner and incharge of municipal solid waste management, said, “The order has been issued to all the hotels and restaurants. Some owners have showed willingness and there are some who have yet not started segregating the wet garbage. They are now asking the PMC to provide separate containers to them.”

“We are holding ward-wise meetings with most of the hotel and restaurant owners and explaining them the procedure of segregating and disposing the waste in their own premises,” he added.

The action
According to Jagtap, a fine of Rs2,000-5,000 will be imposed on erring hotel owners. “We will also issue notices to them and file legal cases against them,” Jagtap said.

Hoteliers counter
The hotel and restaurant owners claim that the order by the civic administration is not practical. Ganesh Shetty, president of Pune Hoteliers Association, said, “We are ready to help the civic administration but the order is impractical. Nearly 80 per cent of the hotels are in old parts of the city and there is no additional space to make arrangements for disposing the garbage. We are planning to give a memorandum of our demands if civic body start issuing notices to us.”
