After incessant rains continued in the catchment areas of dams, 12,775 Cusecs of water was released from Khadakwasla, which resulted in filling up of riverside road. Huge crowds gathered at Baba Bhide bridge and other bridges to witness the flow of river Mutha.

While the water was released at 6,000 Cusecs from Khadakwasla dam on Thursday night,  it was raised to 9,000 Cusecs at 11 am on Friday. Khadakwasla Irrigation Division executive engineer BB Lohar informed that since the inflow of water had increased to Khadakwasla dam, the discharge in the river Mutha was raised to 12,775 Cusec at 1 pm and it will be continued with the same speed till Saturday morning.

There were continuous rains in catchment areas of four dams of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar for almost more than a week.

Rising water level in Panshet filled the dam to almost 95 per cent of its capacity, forcing irrigation department to discharge water at 5,310 Cusecs from its earlier 1,524 Cusecs on Friday. This resulted in continuing the discharge from Khadakwasla with increased speed. Lohar said that even though it is raining in the catchment areas, the rainfall was comparatively less on Friday.

No cause for alarm
Khadakwasla Irrigation Division executive engineer BB Lohar said that even though the discharge of water from Khadakwasla was doubled on Friday, there was no reason to panic. He said that precautions are being taken while discharging water and people should avoid driving in the riverside roads.

Showers to continue
Puneites are likely to get relief from incessant rains as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted intermittent showers in the city for the next 24 hours. As compared to the past few days, the city witnessed less rains on Friday. The rainfall recorded till 8.30 pm on Friday was 1.2 mm.
