Flaying Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for misuse of social media to spread rumours and fomenting communal tension, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday asked Congress workers to use this interactive platform and information technology (IT) effectively to combat such false propaganda.

The CM was addressing party workers during the concluding session of the social media training workshop organised by the party state unit communication department.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakare, minister for cooperation Harshawardhan Patil, minister for forests Patangrao Kadam, party’s Maharashtra incharge Shyoraj Walmiki, state unit women’s wing president Kamal Vyavahare and communication department incharge Sachin Savant were present.

Chavan said that Lord Ganesha drinking milk was the first experiment of rumour spread by RSS and it was recently followed by video clips with morphing of faces leading to communal tension. He said that riots in Miraj and post-Babri Mosque demolition were examples of such designs. The riots would be engineered by such people as a part of strategy and it is likely that such incidents can happen in the near future for political gains.

Without naming Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, Chavan said that political opponents are making false claims and it is not difficult to expose them with accurate statistics and information about development in Maharashtra as well as work done by the UPA Government.

He said that while filing FIR against despicable criticism and false allegations against our leaders, there is a need for retaliating such allegations aptly through the social media. Thakare said that social media training was launched in Pune and such workshops would be held in Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur in October.

Maha cops set up lab to fight rumour
Chavan said that a social media lab has been set up by the Mumbai police to track spread of false propaganda through social media. The CM said that he has requested prime minister Manmohan Singh to establish a similar unit in New Delhi also and tackle such rumours by spreading accurate information through social media, Doordarshan and All India Radio.
