After initial hiccups, the much touted University of Pune’s (UoP) state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor sport complex’s final layout has been chalked out.

In the first phase, a tennis court with international standards is planned to be ready for sport lovers and varsity officials by February 2014.

The total expenditure of the entire project is close to Rs80 crore and the contract of designing the complex has been given to architecture firm Shashi Prabhu Associates.

The complex is planned across 27 on the varsity premises and officials said that the complex would house world-class facilities, including indoor and outdoor sports.

Till now, the varsity that takes pride in imparting quality education had no such facility and there was a demand from all sections that the university should have its own sport complex.

The sport complex will have a 400-metre track and pavilion, a football ground, a swimming pool, an indoor stadium, tennis courts, a fitness centre, and an administrative building.
UoP chief engineer RV Patil said that the initial budget for the project is close to Rs80 crore and its has been approved for the project.

“In the initial stage, we are building the tennis court and it has now reached the final phase. We are planning to make it open from February next year,” he said.

He said that the asphaltation work is done and curing process is going on of the tennis court before a synthetic resin coating will be done.

He said that in the indoor sport complex, there will table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, boxing and taekwando. Space has been allotted for volleyball courts, a basketball court and two key grounds, each for indigenous games such as kabaddi and kho-kho. Also, swimming and diving pools have been designed.

“In the outdoor section, there will be a football ground with 400 metre synthetic coating running track,” he said, adding that there will be a recreation hall, cafeteria, guest rooms for the players and a modern gymnasium.

UoP sport section director Dr Dipak Mane said that the complex will be an encouragement for budding sportspersons.

“Initially, the project was stalled due to some financial constraints but the budget for the proposed sport complex has been taken care of,” said a varsity official.
