The family of 33-year-old Nashik businessman, who was arrested by the Bibewadi police in a cheating case, has moved the Pune court alleging that he was beaten up by police. They said the police also demanded money from the family for his release.

The man was produced before the court of judicial magistrate (First class) KP Jain-Desarda and remanded in magisterial custody. The magistrate directed that a medical check-up be done to confirm or deny the family’s allegations.

The Bibvewadi police arrested the man Pranil Jagtap, who runs an export-import business, for cheating a father-son duo by promising them jobs in the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and duping them of Rs 20.64 lakh. A case was registered by Nachiket Dixit in this regard.

On Wednesday, Pranil’s maternal aunt Madhavi Chakranarayan (62), a resident of Naveen Mangalwar Peth, had moved the court against the investigating officer, complainant Dixit and a lawyer.

Speaking to dna, Chakranayan alleged that Jagtap was picked up on Monday around 9am by the police. They dragged him out of the house and took him to Upper Indiranagar police chowky.
“For two days the police detained him and demanded that we pay Rs20 lakh cash for his release.”

On Wednesday, when Jagtap was asked by magistrate Desarda if he faced any problem, he said no. However, later he alleged that he was beaten up by the police. Immediately, the magistrate directed the police to send him to magisterial custody and treat him at the Sassoon General Hospital.

Speaking to dna, Jagtap’s lawyer Aloor said, “Jagtap was taken to the hospital, but was not given any treatment and I have again approached the court for filing an application that an inquiry be set up against the investigating officer and Jagtap be admitted to hospital.”

Shailendra Shinde, inspector in-charge of Bibvewadi police station said, “Jagtap is fabricating the case as he is the accused. His medical reports are also normal and there is no sign of wounds and so he has been sent to jail.”
