With Pune district receiving only 40% of the normal rainfall till July 7, the cultivation of bajra (pearl millet) has been severely hit.
As per the commissionerate of agriculture, only 3% of the land, which normally falls under bajra cultivation, has been cultivated this year.
The deficient rainfall seems to have played complete havoc with the cultivation of various crops. Kashinath Pagire, deputy director agriculture, stated that the districts of Pune, Satara, Sangli, Ahmednagar and parts of Solapur have been reeling under deficit rainfall. While Pune has received 40% rainfall, Sangli has 52%, Jalna has 49% and Ahmednagar received 79% rainfall.
