Top posts in Pune education board vacant, may affect RTE

At a time when the state government is trying hard to implement the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education, Act 2009 (RTE), the position of director of education remains vacant. The state government is finding it difficult to get a full-time appointee for the post.

Many other top posts are vacant and heads of institutes have been given additional charge of those posts.

On Monday, director of education (secondary) Shreedhar Salunke, who also had charge as director of primary education, retired from service.

The state government has given additional charge as new director of education (secondary) to chairman of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher secondary Education, Sarjerao Jadhav.

Commissioner of Maharashtra State Council of Education (MSCE), Mahaveer Mane has been given additional charge as director of education (primary).

Similarly, joint director of education, GK Mhamane has been given additional charge as director of Balbharati (textbook bureau). This charge was earlier with Jadhav. Likewise, director of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), NK Jarag has been given additional charge of Balchitravani, where educational programmes are created.

Director of MSCE, HI Shinde, has been given additional charge of minorities department (education). Sources in the education department said that many key posts are vacant and existing staff have been given additional charge, which affects discipline and overloads the persons, there by affecting the entire system. 

Jadhav, after taking over charge as director of education, said, “I’ll ensure that the quality of education is improved in the state, besides right implementation of RTE. I’ve set the board and now will ensure that the field officers of education carry out their responsibilities properly.”
