It must have begun after they were all fed up with the traffic and pollution and their adverse effects; some of them with an idea to stay fit without having to go to the gym. But now that their companies are encouraging them, some of them even by providing them bicycles, their army has grown.

Under the employee health and environment-friendly programme, several IT companies are providing cycles to their employees to come to work as well as commute within the company premises.

Some companies have even been organising cycle rallies to spread awareness and promote usage of cycle on a regular basis. The IT professionals say that sometimes simple acts alter the course of one’s future, and cycling is one of them.

For various reasons people are taking cycling in a big way. As it helps them get rid of the noisy, smoky ride on city roads.

Under a health and safety awareness programme launched by IT firm Amdocs, it provides to cycles to its employees to travel within Magarpatta city premises. It also allows employees to take cycles home if they like.

The Infosys premises at Hinjewadi too has such an arrangement. Its approximately two kilometres’ radius and more than 2,000 cycles are kept in the premises for employees as other vehicles are not allowed inside the premises.

Roshan Lal (32), a software engineer at Amdocs, says, “If you want to burn excess calories and lose weight gradually, cycling is the best option. This way we also do our bit to save the environment, so it gives immense satisfaction.”

Document analyst at Cybage, Amit Durgapal (28), says, “It’s just the matter of rising above the considerations of age or prestige and giving it a start. It’s up to us how we want our future to be, traffic jams, pollution, and poor health or a clean environment for our coming generations.”

Govind Konnur of Amdocs’s environmental health and safety (EHS) says, “We have started this initiative to create awareness. We have some 75 bicycles. More than 65 of our employees use cycles to commute within the premises and more than 40 travel to workplace on cycles.”
