“Good fiction writing is not just about pure inspiration, but crafted imagination as well”, says Pune-based filmmaker and writer Salil Desai, known for his best-selling crime novels. The alumnus of Symbiosis and Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), is also the only writer from Pune to be invited to speak at the first National Crime Writers Festival, to be held in Delhi on January 16 and 17. Speaking to Iamin, Desai talked about his journey so far and plans for his future.

How did you come about choosing crime as the genre for your books?

Crime writing is the second most popular genre among readers worldwide and it has an amazing variety of sub-genres. I love to read whodunits and so as an author, I was naturally inclined towards crime writing, especially because crime is something we all feel vulnerable against. I write about crime that is deeply influenced by the social reality around us, the cocktail of circumstances, inequalities, confused values, moralities and dark desires that lead ordinary human beings towards crime.

Where do you find inspiration for your books?
The inspiration for my books comes from both real life experiences, as well as the fertile imagination, I am blessed with. Crime happens all around us and is the manifestation of some of the most sordid motivations of the human mind. I have studied the workings of the Pune police, while making a documentary on Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) a few years ago. I have also done a lot of research and read extensively on how policemen approach investigations.

Being the first Pune-based author to be invited to the Crime Writers Festival, what do you want to focus on while addressing the audience at such a massive level?
My session, titled ‘Bodies, Suspects, Alibis, Clues’, is scheduled for January 17 and I will be sharing my knowledge of the craft while reading interesting excerpts from both my first book and the forthcoming novel. I look forward to fielding questions from them and understanding what they think, feel and expect.

Finally, tell us a little bit about the current projects you are working on.
My first book in the Inspector Saralkar Mystery Series, Killing Ashish Karve, has done quite well and the second book, The Murder of Sonia Raikkonen, is all set to release within a few months. I have also started working on the third book in the series. Since the entire Inspector Saralkar series is based in Pune, I do hope I manage to put the city on the crime fiction map.
