With an aim to address the long pending problem of traffic jams in Hinjewadi area, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is working on a plan to widen the road connecting the National Highway 4 and the IT Park. However, electric poles installed on the road have halted the work of road widening. They also pose danger to commuters during night.

Hinjewadi, once was a secluded area, saw rapid development with various multinational IT companies setting up their offices here. The locality around the area has developed but the infrastructure has not grown with the required pace.

Sudhir Nage, executive engineer of MIDC said, “We have a plan to convert the narrow road into a four or even a six lane road as the traffic is increasing everyday. But these electric poles installed within the carriage width of the road are causing problems. Vehicle users are not able to use the entire width of the road. And since part of the road was unused, vendors encroached there, adding to the traffic congestion,” Nage explained.

The traffic police department has taken up the issue of electricity poles which are causing hindrance for the commutation. Inspector SG Bhambure of Hinjewadi traffic division said, “There are over 12 such poles which are right in the middle of the road. Even if we clear the road by announcing no parking zone, these poles still create hurdle for vehicles. These poles are posing a danger of road mishaps too.”

The traffic police department has sent a letter to the Maharashtra State Electric Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) officials asking them to remove the poles. When Ibrahim Mulani, executive engineer of MSEDCL was asked about the issue, he said, “As the road widening work is being carried out by MIDC, they only will have to remove these poles. In case they require some technical support from us, we will definitely give them that.”
