Bhosari-based ‘Goldman’ Datta Phuge’s name has been entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for purchasing the world’s most expensive shirt.

Phuge made headlines last year by buying a gold shirt weighing 3.5 kg and paying Rs1.27 crore for it. Phuge received the certificate of his Guinness Book record on Friday.

The entry in Guinness Book of World Records has brought plenty of happiness to the Phuge family. For the last few months, Phuge has been receiving bad news. First, he allegedly received extortion calls. Then police investigations revealed that he was debt-ridden. Then, the petition of Datta Phuge’s corporator wife Seema challenging the decision of disqualifying her for using fake caste certificate was rejected by the Supreme Court.

Expressing his feelings at holding the world record, Phuge told reporters that now his good days have started again and the dark clouds in his life were going away. So emotional did he become on receiving the certificate on Thursday that tears rolled down his eyes.

The 40-year-old shot to fame for making the most expensive fashion statement the city has seen in a long time.

Besides, being a well-known landowner, Phuge also runs a co-operative credit society and financial institutions. After setting the world record, Goldman Phuge wants to contest the Shirur parliamentary seat.

The gold shirt

It is made of 22-carat pure gold, which weighs 3.5 kg and is worth Rs1.27 crore. It pieces together 14,000 gold spangles interwoven with 1 lakh rings on a specially imported white velvet cloth. It features six Swavorski crystals as buttons. The shirt has been designed by city-based Ranka Jewellers, who employed 15 skilled artisans from West Bengal. They laboured for 18 hours every day for over two weeks for completing the piece.
