Teen hit by killer pole on bridge, feared drowned

The killer pole along the railway track on Mumbai-Pune line at Harris Bridge on Pavana river at Dapodi claimed another victim on Tuesday. This time, a 17-year-old from Kharalwadi in Pimpri, who was returning home in a local train after filling up the form to appear for the SSC exam as an external student, was hit by the pole.

The victim, Saifiuddin Azad Ansari (17), fell off the train into the Pavana river after his head was hit by the electric pole. Ansari is feared drowned. He could not be found though the fire brigade and police personnel tried looking for him. The search operation had to be stopped at night due to lack of visibility.

The police said Saifuddin’s father works with a company in Bhosari MIDC on contract basis. The incident left the family shell-shocked and they spent the night at the spot praying for Saifuddin’s safety.

Constable DV Barud from Khadki police station said, “Saifiuddin was travelling in a local train from Shivajinagar to Pimpri along with his younger brother Zabiuddin (15) when the incident took place. Zabiuddin raised an alarm after Saifuddin’s head hit the pole and he fell off the train. Other passengers on board alerted us and the fire brigade using their mobiles. Earlier in the day, Saifiuddin had been to the state education board office to fill his form to appear for SSC exam as an external student.”

He added, “After completing formalities at the board office, Saifiuddin and Zabiuddin were returning home in the local train, which reached the spot at Harris bridge at 5.30 pm on Tuesday.”
