Team visits USA, PCMC chief says it was all self-sponsored

Pune: An eight-member team of PCMC representative has just returned to Pune on July 2, from a two-week visit to the US, where they attended a 3-day ‘New Cities Summit 2014’ in Dallas, Texas. The summit, which was held between June 17 and 19, was a leading global event on the future of the urban world.
PCMC commissioner Rajeev Jadhav has said that there was nothing official about the visit. “The tour was self-sponsored and PCMC did not spend any money. I don’t know if this team was invited for the summit or not,” he said.
PCMC standing committee chairman, Mahesh Landge, who was part of the team touring the US during the summit, confirmed that they were invited as guest to the three-day international event. However, he said that it was a personal and self-sponsored visit.
Anil Mengshetti, a junior engineer from the civil department of PCMC, who was also part of the team, informed that they just attended the summit as invited guests and gave no presentation. “The summit was a learning experience for all of us, wherein it was discussed how to stop movement of rural population to cities. The whole subject was about re-imagining the cities of future,” he said. He said that the summit was hosted at Dallas Arts District and was organised by New Cities Foundation from France.
PCMC corporator Seema Savale said that the last three standing committee meetings of PCMC has been adjourned because the chairman of standing committee and other committee members are not available. She said that obviously many decisions on civic development projects within the city are on hold for all this period.
