Notwithstanding the opposition by the district superintendent of police, inspector Balraj Lanjile was awarded the prestigious DG’s Insignia on May 1.

A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry was instituted against Lanjile, who was shunted out of Economic Offenses Wing of Pune Rural police after a case of land grabbing was filed against his wife’s construction company.

District superintendent of police, Pune rural, Manojkumar Lohiya said, “Two days prior to the event, I had received a letter that Lanjile is to be given DG’s Insignia award. The award had been declared four months back and is formally given on May 1. I wrote a letter to the Director General of Police (DGP) office. But it was too late. Later, I came to know that the letter should have been sent through the Inspector General of Police (IG). Being a district superintendent of police I cannot play any role in such matters.”

Lohiya added, “I had informed that an inquiry has been set up against Lanjile in land grabbing case and giving award to him before he gets clean chit will send a wrong message to the people who are awaiting justice.”

Sachin Pansare (30), who has filed a case against Lanjile’s wife’s company, said, “This award has shaken us completely. A man who is misusing his uniform and threatening us in land grabbing is being awarded.”

Despite repeated attempts, DGP Sanjeev Dayal was not available for comment. Inspector Lanjile too was not available for comment.

Though he is a winner of the President’s medal, Lanjile’s tenure with Pune rural police has been shrouded with controversies.

Lanjile & controversies

Inspector Balraj Lanjile was associated with the investigations in the RTI activist Satish Shetty’s murder before the case was transferred to the CBI.

His name had cropped up in the Maval firing incident.

Recently, an inquiry was set up when 30 Chakan-based farmers approached Lohiya over land grabbing done by Lanjile’s wife and others. Later, the investigation was transferred to CID.

Pansare approached lawyer Anita Katariya and filed a private case in court. Accordingly, the court directed Vishrambaug police in the land grabbing case.
