The work of Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) pilot project to cover cycle tracks of Satavwadi in Hadapsar area with synthetic layer has been stopped  by the road department as the material used for the synthetic cover was not tested as per the third party inspection policy norms. The incomplete work is now causing a lot of inconvenience to the commuters.

The Satavwadi project is part of the PMC’s plan to put synthetic layers on all the cycle tracks in the city for better maintenance. PMC had constructed 126 kilometres of cycle tracks in the city under the central government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to promote non-motorised transport.

The aim of preparing these tracks was to create safer passage for cyclists so that they do not have to find their way through heavy vehicles. However, due to poor maintenance and encroachments, the cycle tracks in the city are getting damaged and the whole purpose of promoting non-motorised transport was getting defeated.

Taking cognizance of the complaints about poor maintenance of the tracks, the PMC recently decided to add a synthetic layer on these tracks. They took up a pilot project at Satavwadi in Hadapsar area where 1.2 kilometres of cycle track is being covered with synthetic layer at a cost of Rs70.5 lakh. The work started a couple of months back, but now it has been halted as the contractor needs to test the material, which he did not do, before using it for laying the synthetic track.

Former mayor and corporator of the area Vaishali Bankar said, “The idea of covering cycle tracks with synthetic layer is very good as the tracks will last longer. But the incomplete work is creating problems for local residents. I have asked the municipal administration to finish this work as early as possible.”

Pramod Nirbhavane, head of PMC’s road department said, “As per the third party inspection norms, the material used for any type of work has to be tested before using it. This work was started without testing the material. So the work had to be stopped to test the material first. The work will now continue only after clearing all the tests.”
