A visit to Sindhudurg under the Bhagirath Gramvikas Pratishthan has inspired the students of National Service Scheme (NSS) -Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology (VIIT) to construct a biogas plant on the college premises.

They found that 2,000 biogas plants were built using ferrocement, a form of thin-shell construction that uses standard Portland cement usually mixed with plaster sand, in Sindhudurg.
Pratishthan founder Prasad Deodhar explained the various stages of constructing a biogas plant to students.

The dome-shaped biogas plant on the college premises required 10 days to be constructed. Of the stages, after planning and design of the plant, major task was its implementation.

Placing the brick walls, making the dome roof, building an inlet and outlet required precision and testing until confirmed to be fully functional. The plant covers 10 ft area and the cost of labour and production was around Rs22,000.

The students intend to spread the message of a green and clean environment through this initiative.
