Pune-based Sikh Sangat carried out a public rally against the acquittal of Congress leader, Sajjan Kumar, in Camp area on Sunday morning. The protests were led by Jarnail Singh, a journalist, who had thrown a shoe at the then home minister, P Chidambaram.

The country witnessed Sikh riots and a genocide in 1984 after the assassination of the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi. Kumar was acquitted by the Karkardooma court in New Delhi on April 30.

Over 200 people of the Sikh community participated in the rally which started at the Gurunanak Darbar Gurudwara in Camp at 11 am on Sunday and concluded at the Rani Lakshmibai Garden.

Rajwant Singh of the Sikh Sangat said, “Victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide are still awaiting justice. We are disappointed by the court’s decision.”

“We have written a letter to the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, requesting him to appoint a special investigation team under the supervision of the Supreme Court so that speedy justice is delivered to the 1984 riot victims,” Singh said.
