Interior designer arrested for cheating 77-year-old woman of cash and jewellery

A Bopodi-based interior designer has been arrested by Khadki police for allegedly cheating a senior citizen who treated him like her son and duped her by taking cash and gold jewellery worth Rs6.27 lakh from her. She had handed it over to purchase property, but he betrayed her trust.

The arrested person was identified as Pralhad Pednekar (45). The incident came to light when Rajashree Santosh Hiwale (77), a resident of Raviraj Heritage, near Bhau Patil Road in Bopodi lodged a complaint with Khadki police station against Pednekar on Wednesday.

He has been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 comprising criminal breach of trust and cheating.BS Tele, inspector incharge of Khadki police station, said, “The complainant’s both children are working in USA and send money for her daily expenses. In 2010, carpentry work was carried out in her house, when she met Pednekar. She started treating him like a son and he too took a flat near her house under the pretext of taking care and looking after her. He took her to the hospital and clinics. Later, taking advantage of her loneliness, he started fabricating sob stories and took cash from her with the promise to pay her back later.”

Sub-inspector DR Londe, who is investigating the case, said, “Pednekar asked the complainant to invest money in land so that she will get good returns. He claimed there were lot of house-breaking incidents in the area and it is not safe to keep gold and valuable articles at home. She immediately gave her gold ornaments to him and even some imported articles. From 2012 till last month he took cash of Rs5.27 lakh under the pretext of investing in property.”

He added, “The complainant asked Pednekar to show her land in which he had invested as her two children working aboard were questioning her. To make her realise that Pednekar is using her for money, the complainant’s children stopped sending her money. She tried to borrow money from Pednekar, but he refused to give it. When she demanded return of her own money, he denied that any such amount had been given to him by her. Finally gaining no response from Pednekar, she approached us.”
