After several months of controversy and debate over the botched-up forensic investigations in the death of 19-year-old Sanam Hasan, minister of state for home Satej Patil declared in the monsoon session of the state assembly that the viscera would be sent to the All-India Forensic Laboratory in New Delhi and Nagpur Forensic Laboratory for analysis.

He added that the investigations would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if necessary.

Patil was responding to a question raised by Pune MLC Mohan Joshi, who demanded action against those responsible for the botched-up investigations and a proper viscera analysis report.
Second-year fashion design student of Symbiosis College, Hasan’s death was a mystery when she was found dead the morning after her birthday celebrations.

Her mother Nagina said she would be happy if the investigations are handed over to the CBI. “I am sure they will prove the chain of crime and some other hidden facts will come out. I am shocked that the earlier report of Kalina Forensic Laboratory did not match and now they have matched with our blood samples. City police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has neglected the case.”

dna had reported on May 20 that Hasan’s DNA extracted from the sample of viscera, heart, blood and vaginal smear did not match with her parents’ DNA. After the initial forensic report that said none of the DNA samples matched and the heart belonged to a male, in June the CID collected the samples again and this time the state forensic laboratory confirmed that the report matched.

MLC Joshi said the two different DNA and viscera analysis reports stating that authorities at Sassoon Hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted first said  nine autopsies were conducted on the same day and later changed their statement to 15 autopsies.

“After reading in dna newspaper, I contacted the family. I had asked minister Patil to probe into the negligence of the doctors and the police in collecting the samples and drawing the conclusion. The police have simply said it was a case of alcohol toxicity and they have failed to follow the police manual of evidence to be collected from the spot,” he said.

The CID had planned to exhume Sanam’s body, which is buried in Mumbai. Additional director general of police SP Yadav, who is state CID chief, said, “I am not aware of the CBI probe orders and the questions raised in the monsoon session of the state assembly. We are waiting for the July 30 reports about re-analysis of her viscera.”
