If investigations by the Pune police are to be believed, there may be links between the violence that rocked Mumbai on Saturday and the series of attacks on North East people in the city over the last five days.w
Investigations by the police have revealed that the video clips of killings in Myanmar, which are suspected to have incited violence in Mumbai, have been in circulation in Pune too.
The Pune police have already laid their hands on the video clips and now feel that they were circulated in order to incite people against the migrants from North East and threaten law and order situation in the city.
Senior police officials said it appears that the video clips were being circulated in a most systematic manner to threaten peace and engineer riots.
The police officials said since these clips were found to be circulated in people of a particular community, involvement of fanatic right wing groups cannot be ruled out. “Right now, we are trying to ascertain identities of the people involved in circulating the clips,” a senior police official told DNA on condition of anonymity.
We have got some specific clues and expect to catch the people involved in a few days,”
The officials said they caught hold of these clips after getting specific intelligence inputs. “After the Mumbai violence and initial attacks on people from North East in Pune, we gave a general alert to various police stations and asked the local intelligence branch officials to be ready,” the officer said.
“Meanwhile, the special cell that has been formed to deal with terrorism received a tip-off about the existence of the video clips in the city. The special squad officials then followed the leads and obtained copies of the clips,” he added. Police officials also said that said both the clips circulated in Mumbai and Pune are identical. “We suspect the clips might be in circulation in other places too and have alerted the office of director general of police and home department about the possibility,” a police officer said.
