‘Salesman’ seeks water, rapes 19-yr-old

Pune: A person impersonating himself as a salesman managed to sneak inside a 19-year-old’s house asking for water, and then raped her on Sunday.
The incident came to light when the victim, a resident of Chaturshrungi, lodged a complaint with the police. The culprit has been identified Santosh Shreemant Devkar (27), a resident of Wadarwadi. He has been arrested under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code. Inspector (crime) Shubhash Nikam said, “The victim had come to the city from her village and was staying at her sister’s house in Pune since a week. She had planned to search a job. On Sunday around 11 pm, the victim was alone in the house while her sister had gone out for a walk”.

“Devkar knocked the victim’s house impersonating himself as a salesman. He pretended to be fainting and demanded a glass of cold water.”
He added, “When the victim rushed inside the kitchen to get water. Devkar walked inside the house, gagged the victim’s mouth with her dupatta, tied her across the bed and raped her. During the second attempt of rape, the victim’s sister raised an alarm and alerted us. We have found a bag which had newspapers in it.” Devkar is married and his wife has deserted him as he is an alcoholic.
