Pune: The Shivajinagar police claimed to have cracked an alleged kidnapping and extortion case of a 70-year-old city based structural architectural consultant, Vijay Ruikar.
The four suspects arrested include the mastermind and a 25-year-old student of Agriculture College in Pune.
The kidnapping and failed extortion bid took place on night of November 27 last year, when Ruikar was walking toward his car which was parked on Ghole Road, was intercepted by four unidentified people, who had come in an SUV and bundled him in the car.
The kidnappers then took him on the Ahmendnagar Road and using his cell phone, they had called up the family members of Ruikar and demanded Rs 1crore as a ransom amount.
However Ruikar then managed to give slip to his kidnappers in wee hours of November 28 and reached a city based five star restaurant after hiring an auto rickshaw. From there, he had called up his family and alerted them about his kidnapping. Family members alerted the police, who then had started the hunt.
As per the information given by the Shivajinagar police, with the help of mobile tracing and partial number of the SUV in which Ruikar was kidnapped, they could solve the case.
“We have so far arrested four people including the mastermind and there are four more people, who had actually kidnapped the complainant are currently at large,” said senior police inspector Narendra Jadhav of Shivajinagar police station.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Raju Tilekar (39) Pravin Birajdar (25), Shiva Honmane and Shiva Goddhudagi.
Tilekar used to work with Ruikars around 15 year ago and in order to make some quick money, he had planned to kidnap Ruikar as he was debt ridden and knew about Ruikar’s richness.
Police inspector Prasad Pawar while speaking to dna said that their police personnel Shrikant Waghuwale and Sudhakar Mane had received a tip off about Tilekar and acting on their tip-off, they could zeroed down on other suspects.
Speaking about how Tilekar, had hatched the plan, Pawar said that Tilekar hired other suspects and promised them that he would give them Rs 30 lakh if they help him in the plan and when the kidnapping took place, Tilekar and other three arrested suspects were not in the car and remained outside on the Ahmednagar road in order to collect the money, however their plan flopped as Ruikar managed to give the other four a slip and ran away from their clutches.
Speaking about the Birajdar, Pawar said that he is pursuing a six month course in Agriculture College and hails from Solapur.
The police personnel who helped to crack the case were Baba Shirke, Datta Jadhav, Kedar Adhav, Tushar Khadake, Irfan Momin and Sonam Bhagat.
