Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has collected a total of Rs30.80-crore fine from five mobile phone service provider companies in June for digging various roads to lay cables without seeking permission from the civic authorities.

The information was revealed in response to a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act sought by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena worker Kalpesh Yadav of Vimannagar corner in Wadgaonsheri.

“I observed that digging of roads for cable laying was going on the stretch near my house, on Pune-Ahmednagar road, the road from Kharadi bypass to Mundhwa bridge and the one from Ramwadi to Airport. I filed an application under RTI and the PMC officials informed me that they had granted permission to dig 600-m-long stretch of Ahmednagar Road, “ Yadav said.

Accompanied by Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and civic officials, Yadav found that the length of dug-up road was more than what was granted.

PMC project management cell swung into action and its technical director incharge issued notices to five mobile companies between June 6-18.

A civic official said, “Before issuing notices, we had sought explanation from the mobile companies. However, most did not submit their rejoinders in time. Therefore, we sought legal opinion and imposed penalty on them. None of them have paid the amount yet. We will take stringent action if they fail to pay up.”
