With the weather forecast predicting monsoon rains to hit Pune in a week's time, it seems Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) civic officials are still busy completing pending pre-monsoon works in their wards.

Even though they have surpassed the deadline of June 5, for completing the work, but there is hardly anytime left for completing the remaining the work. Pre-monsoon works like nullah cleaning, removing debris, garbage cleaning, removing hycinth plants from rivers, providing garbage bins in necessary areas, road and pavement work etc are still ongoing in some areas.

PCMC opposition leader, Vinod Nadhe complained that PCMC has just completed 40 percent of pre-monsoon work and over 60 per cent of work is still pending. "Leaving the Pradhikaran area, there are pending works in every ward. The big project works will go on for a year, but the most important work of cleaning storm water drains are still pending and garbage is not cleared in many areas." He added that if the monsoon starts it can give rise to flooding and health related issues.

However, Pandurang Zure, joint commissioner and controller of health department, PCMC said that the cleaning of nullah's are almost complete in all the wards. "Storm water drainage cleaning work is 50 per cent over and we will complete it before the monsoon arrives. Removal of garbage is going on a rapid pace. The monsoon is not going hit till June 25, in Pune, till then we are trying our best to complete all pre-monsoon work in hand." The health department is responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the city by cleaning gutters, garbage etc.

Spokesperson, Engineering Department PCMC, Shirish Poredi said that the underground cabling work for CCTV installations in various wards got extended beyond May 15, deadline. "The work of fixing pavement blocks is still going on in few places. Repairing of road surface is over in almost all the areas," he said.

Citizen living in PCMC area, Pandurang Patil said, "The flooding problems is seen in Chinchwadgaon and Pimpri, where the storm water drainage system is poor or blocked. With incessant rains flooding and water entering low lying houses is common scene."

Meanwhile, citizens who come across any civic issues or inconvenience due to civic works left incomplete, they should use SARATHI (System of Assisting Residents And Tourists through Helpline Information) to log their complaints.
