Pune: For the first time in the last ten years, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is getting a chance to undertake desilting efforts and rock-breaking work at Ravet bund on Pavana river, where PCMC draws water for its drinking water requirements.
Due to weak monsoon this year and water-level in the Pavana dam going down considerably, the irrigation department has decided to curtail the release of water from the dam to meet the emergency situation.

Deputy engineer from water supply department of PCMC, Prashant Patil said that for the first time in 10 years, the water levels at Ravet bund has gone 1 metre below normal level. "We have initiated the desilting and rock breaking work of the river bed at Ravet, so we can increase the live water storage at the bund. It will significantly improve the water flow and help in mending the functions of the water pumps," he said. There are 7 pumps (50mld) at the Ravet bund but due to silt buildup over the years, 3 pumps were not functioning. He also said that the work of desilting will be over within two days and will not affect water supply in anyway.
The pilot project of PCMC of direct closed pipeline from Pavana dam to Ravet water works is yet to materialize. It would have provided clean water besides curtailing wastage of water.
