A chief loco inspector of Indian Railways has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) anti-corruption bureau for alleged involvement in pilfering high speed diesel (HSD) worth Rs10 crore.

Based on source information, the CBI had recently registered an FIR against the suspect Veer Singh Chaudhary of Daund loco refuelling centre. He was arrested on Thursday.

Special judge (CBI) Sudhakar Yarlagadda on Friday remanded him in police custody till May 3.

According to the CBI, the incident took place between April 2011 and July 2012 while Chaudhary was posted at Daund. He and other officials allegedly siphoned off 20.33 lakh litres of HSD. Chaudhary was responsible for decanting the oil tankers, the CBI said.

In order to avoid arrest, Chaudhary had filed an anticipatory bail application which was rejected by the court on April 3.

Chaudhary claimed his duties included periodical checking of accuracy of flow meter, calibration of storage tank and fuel oil of locomotives. “The flow meter provided by office was defective. I had reported this matter to my superiors but no action was taken on it for considerable period. Also, I was not the person directly involved in distribution of HSD,” he had claimed.
