The racing season has just begun and as part of the genteel, old-world glamour that engulfs the social scene, there comes a collection that is designed by someone who is part of racing royalty. We’re speaking about Delna Poonawalla, whose high-fashion creations including hats, fascinators and clothing, specially designed for the races, are being showcased at multi-designer boutique Rudraksh in Aundh.

The races are a glamourous affair the world over, with men exuding suaveness in their crisp suits and hats and  ladies emanating classic elegance with their dresses and elaborate hats. Delna’s collection that is being displayed at Rudraksh is strongly focused on fascinators, besides clothes. “India’s racing fashion is different from the rest of the world for two primary reasons—first, we don’t have the hat culture here, and second, the climate is much warmer. Indian women often get overwhelmed looking at hats, fearing they may be ridiculed for wearing one that is too elaborate. That is why I have focused on fascinators,” says Delna, adding, “The ones in my collection are small. Our women are petite, so small hats and fascinators suit them. Besides, they don’t intimidate Indian women either, which is why I’m promoting them.”

In trend this season are colour-blocked hats, along with monochromatic ones. “You can also team up a hat that is the same colour as your dress. Or, if you’re wearing a green and blue dress, you could wear a blue fascinator and colour block your ensemble,” Delna adds. She also states that while picking a hat, one should make sure that its brim isn’t greater than that the width of one’s shoulders.

One faux pas that Delna often witnesses, is women overdoing their ensemble. “If you’re wearing an elaborate hat, keep the dress simple. Conversely, if the dress is elaborate, keep the hat simple. Many women wear a prominent dress, lots of jewellery and a prominent hat, which isn’t how it should be,” she said.

When one talks race fashion, a dress is often the only thing that comes to mind. But Delna dispels that notion. “Not just dresses, you could also wear jumpsuits. Jeans and shorts, however, are a strict no-no at the races,” Delna advises, adding that drapes look great on full-bodied women..
