Change of rules has made things difficult to predict winners in recent times. The old pattern of ten rounds to decide the ultimate winner, and the carried forward points from the pre qualification has become history, as according to the new rule set by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), of two rounds has made things not very friendly. Anjali Mandar Bhagwat, the professional Indian shooter, and the former world number one (10m rifle) and World Cup champion speaks to Joe Williams about the present shooting scenario.

What is the prospect of Indian shooters making it to the podium?

We have talented shooters, especially the youngsters, in all the categories. And our Indian federation is contributing to the needs of the athletes, and we have all the chances to make it to the podium.

How would you compare the present scenario with the times when you were at your peak?

The new set of youngsters are making their mark, and we have many of the top shooters from our country. So there is no dearth of talent, but there are few issues, which I feel could be set backs.

Could you elaborate on the set backs?

It is very simple, the new system of points wherein one shooter is eliminated after two rounds is something, which is not to the liking of many. This does keep the spectators guessing after very two shots. But, the set back for the shooters as one has to start afresh after every two shots which could be the reason.

How would you compare rules?

The ten rounds was good and I am very sure many would support me. According to the previous rules, the top eight shooters would go in the last final round of ten, and the shooter who tops after the rounds becomes the winner. But the present rules of two rounds, keeps everyone guessing and one has to start all over again which is a set back.

How many medals do you think we can win in the forthcoming Asian and Commonwealth Games?
I would not be able to predict who would win, but we Indians are on the top and should make it to the podium. Again, I would not be able to predict as this new rules has robbed the sheen out of the shooters.
