Thousands of commuters were stranded as the train service between Pune- Mumbai route collapsed as the automatic signalling system on the central line went off after the signal cable was gutted in fire on Wednesday. Sinhgad Express and Pragati Express running from Pune were cancelled while the Deccan Queen train reached Mumbai almost five hours late than its usual time.

YK Singh, public relation officer of Pune division of central railway, said, “After the automatic signaling system went off near Kurla, the railway administration shifted the signalling system on manual system due to which the trains running on central line were affected.” The Sinhgad Express which departs from Pune railway station at 6.05 am and the Pragati Express leaving at 7.50 am were cancelled. Only Deccan Queen could depart from Pune to Mumbai on Wednesday morning.

Singh said, “The Sinhgad and Pragati Express trains could not reach Mumbai. Therefore, the same trains returning from Mumbai were also cancelled.”

After the train service collapsed, passengers turned to the MSRTC buses and private operators to reach Mumbai from Pune on Wednesday morning.

Vijay Divate, senior depot manager of Swargate ST depot, said, “ We ply 370 buses on Pune-Mumbai route and during the weekdays we have to cancel 10% of the trips due to non availability of passengers. However, on Wednesday, not a single trip to Mumbai was cancelled.” Passengers also went for private taxis running on Pune-Mumbai route.
