The United States administration has announced a multi-million dollar grant for a project aimed at use of non-conventional technology to produce power, which has been developed by an engineer researcher originally hailing from Pune.

Azam Thatte, a student of Pune’s Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya and Maharashtra Institute of Technology is now working with General Electric Company at its research centre near New York. He had also been involved in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) project which resulted in observations of molecules from planets in other solar systems, which would be significant in the quest for discovery of life on other planets.

Energy secretary Ernest Moniz made the announcement at the Solar Power International Conference held in Chicago recently.

He said the US administration would provide a multi-million dollar grant for this project.

The grant would be given to Thatte and his team to further their non-conventional technology for producing power.

Azam explained the importance of his project in a communication through his city-based father.

Azam said that the research by his team would completely transform the power generation sector worldwide.

Azam Mihir Thatte is the grandson of socialist leader of yesteryears late Yadunath Thatte, who was a contemporary of the late SM Joshi and late NG Goray. Born on August 19, 1981, Azam, after graduating in engineering at Pune left for Pennsylvania University for pursuing his MS and did his PhD at Georgia Tech University.
