Pune University plans to get a greener campus

Pune: The University of Pune, known for its lush green cover, has decided to plant as many as 5000 trees from Indian rare species on its premises. Apart from the tree plantations, the varsity is also planning to plant species which will increase the flower bed in the premises.

“The objective of this initiative is to increase ecological biodiversity. We will be planting indigenous varieties of trees, and will take responsibility for irrigating them on regular basis,” said R V Patil, the Chief Engineer, University of Pune.

Patil said that apart from the flower bed plants, they will also be planting shady trees such as Sita Ashok, Neem, Kailashpati, Gul Mohar, Bakul, Kanchan, among others in strategic locations at the campus to give more green canopy, and oxygen.
