Students are creating a window to the world of architecture through their exhibits on design and building technology in the form of large-scale models, documentation works, complex projects, urban design studies and various installations.

Exhibition ‘Insight 2012-13’ was inaugurated recently at Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil College of Architecture (PVPCOA) on its Pirangut campus in Pune.

Noted senior kirtankar, Wamanbuwa Kolhatkar, inaugurated the exhibition, who also gave an introductory talk on kirtan parampara. On the occasion, young engineering student and kirtankar, Pranav Deo, inspired the students by his kirtan based on the life of Swami Vivekananda and Shivaji Maharaj.

The Insight 2012-13, said Hrishikesh Ashtekar, assistant professor, PVPCOA, “Is one-of-its-kind exhibition and gallery dedicated to students’ work, which is open round the year during college timings for visitors. It serves as a platform for students to give a glimpse of what architecture is all about.”

The exhibition gives students a chance to understand the kind of work done by architectural students in the studio and during their relative study programme conducted at different places in India.

Large-scale models of historic buildings in India and abroad are also being exhibited. The documentations of Chettinad houses done by students of 1st year B Arch and modern architecture in Chandigarh done by students of 3rd year B Arch, are noteworthy. One can also see complex projects like social housing for MHADA designed by students of 4th year B Arch.

An important exhibit is the urban design study done by students of 4th year B Arch called ‘Exploring Laxmi Road’. It explains the socio-cultural context, urban form and spaces of areas along Laxmi Road in Pune. Existing urban fabric models of Laxmi Road are also displayed.

“Students travel to these far off places to understand, measure and draw the historical and vernacular architecture apart from understanding life of people in these places. Art is an important dimension of architectural education which is explored through the various basic design exercises done in the form of models and drawings by first and second year students,” said Ashtekar.

Apart from the exhibition gallery, there are various interesting installations and paintings done in various parts of the campus. Here, one can also see various caricatures drawn on walls by students in line with the tradition of exploring the architecture in the public domain.
