Carpool service has benefitted 28-yr-old techie Hemant Prasad in many ways. After moving to Pune in 2009 and joining the IT sector, he used the pick and drop facility of cab.

Later, he purchased a motorcycle before doctors advised him to stop riding after he suffered slip disc. The carpool service gives him the option to go with his buddies as per his time preference.

More than 40% of working women are using this service as apart from co-passengers, sometimes even the drivers are females. Carpooling has been around for many years now. Though it has gained popularity, there are no working models in India.

Two techies, who left their jobs to start mebuddie car pool agency, have been providing the facility to more than 1,000 staff working at Hinjewadi IT park since January this year. The duo provide the option to choose a male or female driver.

mebuddie founder, who do not want to reveal his name said, “People have the preferability when they have disposable income. Those who do not want to use office cab or bus service can use our facility.”

Reshma Khan (40) of Sus, who is working with Tech Mahindra at Hinjewadi said, “It use to take more than 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the office as I had to change autorickshaws at four different places. With this car pool service, I am able to book it online and pay money as per the usage with my own preference of female passengers and drivers.”

More than 750 people, including 250 women, are using the facility of carpooladda that was launched by Sanjay Chauvan in January.

He said, “Our target is corporate sector.”

Mahadev Gavade, police inspector, traffic planning branch, Pune city said, “If carpool works then we can say that the traffic at Hinjewadi and other major parts of the city will be reduced by 50% as one car takes 12.5 square metre space on road.”

Facilitator

Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. By having more people using one vehicle, carpooling reduces each person’s travel costs such as fuel costs and the stress of driving.
