PMC earth removers carry out the river beautification work near Vaikunth crematorium on Tuesday

Pune: On the occasion of World Earth Day, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a river cleaning drive in Mutha river where nearly 10 tonne of waste were removed from the riverbed on Tuesday.
Civic chief Vikas Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner Omprakash Bakoria and 400 other civic officials participated in the drive. Apart from PMC officials, some 70 volunteers from Cummins Company and members of NGOs had also participated in the drive.
The drive was carried out at Omkareshwar temple, Warje bridge, Bhide Bridge, Tilak Bridge, Mhatre bridge wherein ten earth movers were used. 
Suresh Jagtap, head of the solid waste management department of PMC, said, “This is just the start of the river beautification drive. We have managed to remove nearly 10 tonnes of waste from the river bed which was creating problem in the water flow. The drive of will continue in future too.”
The PMC has also undertaken pre-monsoon work where various nullahs and other water bodies are being cleaned to avoid water logging during monsoons. PMC commissioner Vikas Deshmukh on Tuesday inspected the pre-monsoon work which is being carried out in the city.
