Pune Railway division still to seal 12 unmanned gates

All are to be blocked by 2014, six out of 18 have been closed till now

Following few incidents, where major tragedies were averted on railway tracks, dna finds out that there are 18 unmanned railway crossings that are supposed to be sealed by March 2014. However, only six gates out of 18 unmanned railway crossings have been closed so far by the Pune railway division.

On Tuesday afternoon, around 2:45 pm, a SUV car driver trying to take a short-cut near Dalvinagar, got stuck on the railway track and it took more than 45 minutes to remove the vehicle from the railway track. SUV driver Deepak Mahadev Kalbhor was produced in the court, on Wednesday. In the meanwhile, from Wednesday, the railway authorities have swung into action and they are putting up fencing in the area so that such incidents can be averted in the future.

YK Singh, PRO, Pune railway division said, “As many as 168 railway crossings come under the purview of Pune railway division. Out of which 141 are manned and 27 are unmanned, while all the gates on Pune-Lonavala route are closed manned gate. Some six gates out of 18 unmanned gates have been closed and the remaining will be closed by the March next year.”

Singh further said, “We have started the fencing work near Dalvinagar railway track. And we will also intensify the drive and check that people do not cross railway track illegally. We will be putting up fencing in the area where we feel that people will have access to railway tracks and they can cross illegally with their vehicle.”
