Pune police to meet bankers on ATM theft issue

Against the backdrop of Tuesday’s Bangalore incident, in which a woman bank manager was assaulted by an unidentified person inside an ATM, Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has called an decided to call a meeting of bank officials. He will issue a fresh security guidelines to them in the next couple of days.

Pol said, “It has been observed that most of the ATMs are without guards and at many places the guards are found without firearms.” Pol further said that they have taken the Bangalore incident seriously and will issue fresh guidelines now.

According to Pune police records, as many as 16 ATM thefts took place in 2013. The figure stood at 10 in 2012. The data referred to the ATM thefts (minor and major ones) across all the police stations areas during the past two years. Pol directed additional commissioner (Crime) Shahaji Solunke to call a meeting of the top bankers in the next few days and chalk out a security roadmap for the ATMs.

The crime branch will prepare a list of officers handling security at various ATM installations and will carry out sensitisation programme.
