Shankarseth Road, Bombay Garage and Castillon Road have been identified as three spots for foot overbridges.
The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has decided to construct three foot overbridges in Camp area at a cost Rs2 crore.
These skywalks will be constructed on the stretch of Shankarsheth Road from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hospital to Golibar Maidan, on the road stretch from Bombay Garage to Rani Lakshmibai Garden and at Castillon Road near Krishna Kunj.
The decision was taken in the PCB board meeting where the authorities said that the work will start in a couple of months once the tendering process is completed.
Ketan Vasant Shirodkar, chief engineer of PCB, said, “We have received several applications from the citizens requesting us to construct skywalks in the area. Finally, we had put the proposal in the recent board meeting wherein we got the approval from the board members.”
Shirodkar added, “The skywalk at Golibar Maidan will cost Rs65 lakh, the one on the road stretch from Bombay Garage to Rani Lakshmibai Garden will cost Rs60 lakh and Rs75 lakh will be needed for the skywalk on Castillon Road. The width of these skywalks will be around 30 metres.”
However, though there were few citizens who felt that the skywalks will make commuting easy for pedestrians, few feel that it is waste of money.
Ajay Jagtap (59), a resident of the area, said, “It is difficult to cross the road near Kastur Kunj and Golibar Maidan as there is heavy in flow of traffic from Hadapsar, Kondhwa and Swargate.”
Vinayak Katkar, member of Pune City Labor Front, said, “There are so many important issues that are pending and PCB is misusing funds on skywalks. No one uses them and we will be giving a memorandum to PCB to stop this work.”
